Gerald Alfred "Red" James, 89, passed away Friday, January 25, 2019, at Unity Point Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be held 10:30 AM Friday, February 8, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, February 8, at Hopeville Cemetery in Hopeville, IA.
Red was born May 21, 1929, in Hopeville, IA, to Gerald and Katherine (White) James. He married Velda Searl on November 7, 1950 and served in the US Army during the Korean War.
Red worked at Firestone for 33+ years, retiring in 1985. He was very heavily involved in the credit union operations throughout the state. He was also a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul.
Red is survived by his wife of 68 years, Velda, his children Jerome (Myra) James of Johnston, Susan Donnelly of Como, CO, Sheila Stevens of Urbandale, and Edward ( Lulu) James of Johnston; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his siblings,William (Cheri) James of Waterloo, IA, Martin (Pat) James of St. Charles, MO, and Martha (Gene) Kraber of West Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Paul James and Mary K. Unrein.
The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday, February 7, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Contributions may be made to the DMARC Food Pantry or the Catholic Worker House. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
