Drake University recently issued the following announcement.
The Drake University women's golf team held steady in third place to finish the Creighton Classic in Omaha, Neb. on Tuesday afternoon with the low round of the day.
The Bulldogs finished with a 36-hole total of 630 (322-308) which was nine strokes behind second-place Northern Iowa. Host school Creighton won the event with a 617 (306-311).
"I am proud of the way the ladies bounced back in the final round," said Drake head coach Rachael Pruett-Hornbaker.
Drake was led by Kristen Giles, who finished tied for third with 151 (77-74) for her second top-10 finish of the Fall season. Aimee Gerschke finished seventh with a total of 158 (83-75) for her second consecutive top-10 finish. Freshman Abby Marting finished tied for eighth with a 36-hole total of 159 (78-81).
"Kristen was incredibly solid both days and secured a third-place finish," Pruett-Hornbaker said. "Aimee and Abby both snagged a top 10 finish as well. And as a team we had the low round of the day."
Sigurlaug Jonsdottir recovered from a difficult first round to finish tied for 12th, recording a 162 (84-78), and Erica Olberding closed out the Bulldogs' five scoring players with a 167 (86-81) and finished tied for 20th.
The Bulldogs also sent three individual golfers to the event, led by Sam Paulak who fired a 167 (88-79) to finish tied for 20th along with Olberding. Reilly Krohe and Lexi Meade each recorded 36-hole totals of 170 to finish tied for 26th and to round out play for Drake.
"This isn't the finish we were hoping for this fall," Pruett-Hornbaker added. "The slip in performance does give us a reminder to stay focused on the process and to put in the work this offseason. This group has a bold vision for the season and I can feel the intensity to make that vision a reality."
The Bulldogs will kick off their Spring season with the Ball State Match Play event in Dade City, Fla. on Feb. 6-7.
