Grand View University recently issued the following announcement.
The Grand View Vikings fell in a non-conference matchup with the Chargers of Briar Cliff 86-71.
The game started off with both teams trading stops on the defensive end. The Chargers came out hot making five of their first nine attempts from the three-point line. The Charger's hot shooting would continue throughout the first half as they would shoot 54% (19/35) from the field and 44.4% (8/18) from the three. The Vikings did a nice job not fouling as they would only send the Chargers to the free-throw line once in the first half. The Vikings shot 37.1% (13/35) from the field and 30.8% (4/13) from the three. The Vikings would have some mental errors that would cost themselves. The team only would turnover the basketball six times, but four of them from a traveling violation and one from dribbling off their own foot out of bounds. The Chargers would get three offensive rebounds in the first half, unfortunately for the Vikings all three times the Chargers would capitalize on the second opportunities. After half of play Drew Johnson (JR/Clive, Iowa) would have 10 points.
The Chargers would go on two major runs in the second half and the Vikings could never respond with a big run of their own. Early in the second half with 16 minutes remaining, Johnson would hit a three to cut the lead to 12. Over the next five minutes, the Chargers would push the lead back to 20. The Vikings would then go on a 10-3 run over the next four minutes to cut the lead to 13. In that run, Kyle Haynes (SR/Ankeny, Iowa) would knock in a three, Jay Chen (JR/Taipei, Taiwan) would add an old fashioned three-point play, and Josh Streeter (JR/Rockford, Illinois) would have two strong finishes in the paint. Briar Cliff would respond and go on a 16-3 run and push their lead back to 26 with just over 2:30 to go in the game. The Vikings would go on an 11-0 run at the end of the game to make the final 86-71. In that run, both Riley McCoy (JR/Ankeny, Iowa) and Connor Sonius (SR/Britt, Iowa) would chip in four points apiece and Caleb Grizzle (FR/Ankeny, Iowa) would knock down a three and the Vikings final possession.
